LONDON: British media outlets have published a report containing claims that have created renewed debate within international political and security circles. The former US President Donald Trump allegedly directed America’s most elite military unit, the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), to prepare a confidential plan for a potential military operation involving Greenland.
Furthermore, the report, citing informed sources, claims that the alleged directive involved contingency planning for possible military action or control of the strategically significant Arctic territory. Greenland, an autonomous region within the Kingdom of Denmark, has long held geopolitical importance due to its location and growing relevance amid increasing Arctic competition.
In this regard, the hardline figures within the Trump administration were said to be central to the discussions. The report identifies senior policy adviser Stephen Miller as a leading figure among those advocating a more assertive approach.
However, the report also mentions strong resistance from within the US political and military establishment. The senior American military commanders and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are said to have firmly opposed the idea.
The military leadership warned that such an operation would face immediate legal obstacles and severe political consequences.
The sources stated that congressional approval would be highly unlikely, while the move could seriously strain relations within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Denmark, a key NATO ally, would be directly affected by any action involving Greenland, raising concerns about alliance unity.
The report further outlines three alleged objectives behind the proposed planning. These include diverting public attention from economic pressures within the United States, presenting a major foreign policy success ahead of midterm elections, and countering the expanding presence of Russia and China in the Arctic region.
The story underlined ongoing concerns about how major powers view the Arctic’s future and highlights the importance of diplomacy and international cooperation in maintaining regional stability.
