WASHINGTON: The United States administration under President Donald Trump is giving serious consideration to possible action against Iran, according to a report published by The New York Times.
In this regard, the report states that President Trump has already been briefed on a range of military options related to Iran.
The discussions have begun on the possibility of targeting non-military sites inside Iran. These deliberations are taking place against the backdrop of ongoing anti-government protests across the country.
Furthermore, President Trump has not yet made a final decision regarding military action. However, he is said to be seriously weighing the option of authorizing limited strikes in response to what Washington views as Iran’s efforts to suppress protesters through force.
The administration is concerned about the Iranian government’s handling of the demonstrations and the alleged use of violence against civilians. Moreover, the New York Times report further notes that any potential action under consideration would not necessarily focus on Iran’s military installations.
Instead, discussions have included the possibility of targeting non-military infrastructure, although no final strategy or operational details have been confirmed.
Meanwhile, protests in Iran have continued for the thirteenth consecutive day, with reports of escalating violence. In such a case, at least 65 people have been killed so far, including 15 security personnel.
However, a separate report by Time Magazine claims the death toll could be significantly higher, estimating that up to 217 people may have died during clashes between protesters and security forces.
President Trump has recently issued warnings to Iran’s leadership, stating that the United States would respond strongly if protesters were killed.
In such a case, Trump has stated that Iran appears to be moving toward greater freedom compared to the past and focused on that the United States is prepared to support the Iranian people.
The developments come amid heightened regional tensions and close international scrutiny. Analysts note that any US action against Iran, even if limited, could have far-reaching consequences for regional stability and global diplomacy.
