First female PEMRA head: Ambreen Jan’s name sent to PM for final nod

Former Information Secretary Ambreen Jan has been selected as the new Chairperson of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).

ISLAMABAD: Former Information Secretary Ambreen Jan has been selected as the new Chairperson of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra). Upon final approval, she will become the first female head of the media regulatory body.

Her appointment was unanimously approved by a parliamentary committee chaired by Shahbaz Babar. Following the committee’s decision, her name has been sent to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for final approval.

Ambreen Jan, a former Grade 22 officer, has served as the Managing Director of state-run Pakistan Television (PTV). She will succeed the current PEMRA Chairman, Muhammad Saleem Baig.

She was selected from a shortlist of five candidates, which included Brigadier (retd) Anwar Ahmed, Matin Haider, Irfan Ashraf, and Dr. Hameed Khan.

Meanwhile the Inspector General (IG) of Balochistan Police, Muhammad Tahir, has emphasized his force’s commitment to public safety and the use of modern technology to realize the “dream of a peaceful Pakistan.”

The IG made these remarks during a meeting on Thursday with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) central leader and head of the Bangulzai tribe, Sardar Noor Ahmad Bangulzai, who called to congratulate him on assuming his new post. DIG Telecommunication and Transport Ali Sher Jakhrani was also present.

“Balochistan Police is performing its duties, even at the cost of lives, to protect the people and their property,” stated IG Tahir. He outlined his focus on enhancing police capacity through modern training and the adoption of new technology tailored to contemporary requirements. He credited the police for playing a “key role” in maintaining order in the province.
