PESHAWAR: Peshawar police have arrested an Afghan national for making an anti-Pakistan statement in a viral video, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Shah Nawaz, was taken into custody from the Khazana refugee camp in the Daudzai area. The arrest followed the circulation of a video on social media in which Shah Nawaz was seen making derogatory remarks against Pakistan.
According to police sources, the accused has admitted to making the statement during initial interrogation and has expressed remorse for his actions. “The Afghan national has admitted to making an anti-Pakistan statement and apologized for his statement,” a police official stated.
Authorities have indicated that the legal process is now being followed to remove him from the country. “The accused Shah Nawaz will be deported to Afghanistan after fulfilling the legal requirements,” confirmed a police source. The case highlights ongoing tensions and the sensitive legal status of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, where authorities have recently intensified actions against individuals involved in illegal activities or making hostile statements.
The police have not disclosed the specific content of the statement but emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards any rhetoric deemed harmful to the state or national unity. The incident underscores the challenges of managing social media content and refugee populations while maintaining national security.
Meanwhile Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti extended New Year greetings to the nation on Monday, framing the coming year as the dawn of a transformative era focused on peace, prosperity, and public service for the province.
In an official message, CM Bugti stated that the new year offers a vital opportunity for “self-accountability, national unity, and joint struggle.” He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to placing public welfare at the forefront of its agenda, with specific emphasis on securing a bright future for the youth through enhanced focus on education, healthcare, and the creation of employment opportunities.
