QUETTA: A late-winter spell of rain and heavy snowfall disrupted life across Quetta for a second consecutive day on Wednesday, even as a separate roof collapse tragedy claimed three lives in the Naseerabad district.
The precipitation, arriving after prolonged dry spells that raised drought fears, intensified the cold and crippled civic utilities. Residents of the provincial capital faced widespread power outages and gas supply disruptions.
A spokesperson for Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) stated that power feeders had tripped in multiple areas due to the rain and existing encroachments on lines. “Our teams are working round the clock to restore the uninterrupted power supply,” the official said.
The severe weather also turned fatal elsewhere in the province. In Dera Murad Jamali, located in Naseerabad district approximately 350 km from Quetta, the roof of a residential room collapsed under heavy rainfall. The incident killed three members of the same family. The deceased were identified as Nazira Bibi, 38, Saeeda Umar, 13, and eight-year-old Meer Zaidi Umar. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.
The rain and snow are expected to continue across parts of Balochistan, with officials advising caution.
Meanwhile the new-year celebrations turn tragic several people including children, women’s wounded by stray bullets across Karachi on Thursday night.
According to rescue 1122 Karachi, so far 17 people injured in different areas of the Karachi, the injured were shifted to Jinnah hospital and Abbas Shaheed hospital.
According to the police, 9 people were injured in aerial firing in different areas, while 16 people involved in aerial firing have been arrested.
According to Karachi city police they have arrested 16 individual in different areas, Korangi, Laiqatabbad and west Karachi.
It should be noted that on the occasion of the New Year, the Sindh Home Department had issued a notification banning the exhibition of weapons and aerial firing in Karachi.
The police has enforced strict measures across the city including the establishment of snap cheaqking points and deployment of drone cameras to nabs the criminals.
