India violates Indus Waters Treaty with new Chenab project

NEW DELHI: India has once again approved a hydropower project on the Chenab River in open violation of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Pakistan People’s Party Vice President and Senator Sherry Rehman strongly condemned India’s water aggression, stating that the Dulhasti Stage-II hydropower project constitutes a direct assault on Pakistan’s recognized water rights.

Sherry Rehman emphasized that unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty violates international laws, global principles, and regional peace.

The Indian project poses threats to Pakistan’s water, agricultural, and environmental security.

The PPP leader added that the Dulhasti project could prove damaging to Pakistan from defensive and strategic perspectives as well, with India using water as a weapon to fuel tensions and instability.

Sherry Rehman pointed out that the sudden and unusual reduction in Chenab River flow serves as evidence of Indian water aggression.

The Indus Waters Treaty is not subject to any single country’s discretion but is a document established under international guarantees.

Attempts to establish monopoly over rivers could lead to severe consequences.

She declared that water is Pakistan’s red line with no room for compromise.

If India does not desist, it will face defeat united as one solid wall. Violations of the Indus Waters Treaty will be effectively highlighted on international forums, and India must abandon unilateral actions to adhere to international agreements.
