JACOBABAD: In a major disruption to rail services, two key trains—the Jaffar Express traveling from Peshawar to Quetta and the Bolan Mail originating from Karachi—were suddenly halted at Jacobabad Railway Station on Saturday due to urgent security reasons. The decision, confirmed by railway authorities, was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety amid unspecified threats. Officials have launched a comprehensive assessment of the situation, with services expected to resume only after conditions normalize.
The abrupt stoppage has left hundreds of passengers stranded, leading to significant inconvenience. Railway officials emphasized that safety protocols necessitated the action. “Both trains were stopped at Jacobabad to prioritize passenger security,” said a senior railway spokesperson. “Relevant authorities are evaluating the threat level, and we are adhering to their guidelines.” Passengers on the affected trains reported confusion and frustration, as they were not given prior notice. “We are stuck here with minimal information,” shared a traveler on the Bolan Mail. “It’s unsettling.”
Compounding the travel chaos, the railway administration has also cancelled the Chaman Express, which was scheduled to run from Quetta to Chaman on Sunday. This cancellation underscores the widening impact of security concerns on regional rail operations. Jacobabad, a critical junction in Sindh, has often been a focal point for security measures due to its proximity to sensitive areas. Historically, the region has seen intermittent disruptions in rail traffic linked to threat alerts.
Authorities have assured that stranded passengers are being provided with basic amenities, including food and water, while security sweeps are conducted. “We are monitoring the situation closely and will restore services as soon as it is deemed safe,” the spokesperson added. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Pakistan Railways in balancing operational efficiency with security in volatile zones. Passengers are advised to contact railway helplines for updates on rescheduled services or alternative travel arrangements.
This is not an isolated event; in recent months, multiple train services have been interrupted due to similar alerts, reflecting persistent risks in certain corridors. The railway department reiterates its commitment to safety, even at the cost of temporary disruptions. As assessments continue, passengers remain hopeful for a swift resolution to resume their journeys.
