ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to impose travel restrictions on several senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in connection with cases related to the events of May 9.
In this regard, there are several sources mentioned that significant progress has been made in the ongoing investigations, prompting the government to move forward with adding the names of key political figures to the Exit Control List (ECL).
In this sense, the approval for placing these names on the ECL has reportedly been granted.
The list includes PTI founder Imran Khan, along with senior leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Omar Ayub, Fawad Chaudhry, Shibli Faraz, Ali Amin Gandapur, Shehryar Afridi, Usman Dar, Shireen Mazari, Zartaj Gul, Musarrat Cheema and Kanwal Shauzab.
Furthermore, former interior minister Sheikh Rasheed, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, and retired Major Tahir Sadiq have also been included.
So far, the sources further revealed that other political figures, including Raja Basharat and Waseeq Qayyum Abbasi, have also been barred from leaving the country.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Home Department had earlier forwarded recommendations to the federal government, accompanied by a detailed list of individuals proposed for travel restrictions. In view of the developments linked to the May 9 unrest, the authorities decided to formally place the names on the ECL.
The ECL committee subsequently reviewed the recommendations and submitted them to the federal government for formal approval.
The decision indicates an important step in the government’s ongoing efforts to pursue accountability related to the May 9 incidents, which led to widespread political and legal repercussions.
The travel ban aims to ensure the availability of the listed individuals for the ongoing investigations and legal proceedings. Meanwhile, further official announcements are expected as the government completes the formal process of updating the ECL.
