Cross-border clashes leave dozens dead and injured near Chaman

ISLAMABAD: The heavy exchange of gunfire along the Chaman–Spin Boldak border late last night resulted in vital casualties on both sides, increasing tensions in the already sensitive frontier region. In addition, as per the preliminary share by local administrative and security sources, an Afghan attack near the border triggered intense fighting that continued for several hours.

In this sense, 16 Taliban personnel were killed and 32 others injured on the Afghan side during the confrontation. In addition to militant casualties, the incident had a severe impact on nearby civilian populations.

Furthermore, the situation has raised concerns among humanitarian and security agencies, who fear further escalation if immediate de-escalation steps are not taken. However, independent verification of events remains limited due to restricted access to the conflict zone.

Moreover, the residents of Chaman, Spin Boldak, and nearby settlements described a night of panic, with many families taking shelter indoors as gunfire echoed across the border. The markets in the area remained closed on Wednesday morning, and road movement was significantly reduced as people awaited clearer information about the security situation.

Meanwhile, the security personnel confirmed that a high alert has been declared across the border belt, with additional personnel deployed to prevent further hostilities.

So far, the humanitarian workers expressed deep concern over the civilian toll and urged both sides to ensure the protection of non-combatants. They focused on the importance of restraint and dialogue in preventing future incidents, particularly in regions where border communities are closely linked by trade, kinship, and daily movement.

On the other hand, the security forces have launched a successful operation in Kalat in order to remove the menace of terrorism.

The tension remains high in Chaman, Spin Boldak, and adjacent areas. Both sides are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, while residents hope for an end to the violence and the restoration of normalcy in this historically volatile region.
