MOSCOW: Russia has offered to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan in an effort to ease rising tensions along their shared border. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that ensuring stability in the region remains one of Russia’s top priorities.
She noted that Moscow is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to facilitate dialogue if both countries agree to engage.
The development comes after Iran also expressed willingness to mediate between Islamabad and Kabul as concerns grow over continued friction and border-related incidents.
Moreover, Zakharova described Pakistan and Afghanistan as “important regional partners” for Russia. She warned that prolonged border tensions could pose a serious threat to broader regional security and cooperation.
“In such circumstances, mediation efforts can play a constructive role in establishing sustainable peace,” she said, adding that Russia believes durable solutions can only be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy.
The spokesperson urged both countries to exercise restraint, avoid steps that could escalate the situation, and work toward resolving their differences through peaceful means.
She reasserted that negotiations remain the most effective path for addressing disputes and restoring stability.
However, Russia focused on the fact that ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan risk undermining peace and development across the wider region.
Moscow called on both sides to continue diplomatic engagement, confirming its readiness to support any process that could help reduce hostilities and rebuild trust.
The offer marks another instance of regional stakeholders expressing concern over the deteriorating situation and encouraging a return to diplomatic channels.
