NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has called on the international community to take immediate and effective measures to prevent the illegal transfer of modern weapons into Afghanistan.
In this regard, Ambassador Ahmad showed high concern over the growing access of terrorist groups in Afghanistan to advanced weaponry.
He said that the presence of such arms not only endangers Afghanistan’s internal security but also has grave implications for the entire region.
“The illegal flow of modern arms into Afghanistan is fueling instability and empowering terrorist organizations,” the Pakistani envoy stated.
“These groups are openly operating and carrying out attacks that have become a major challenge to peace and security across the region.”
In this sense, Ambassador Ahmad noted that terrorist networks continue to receive both financial and logistical support from international sources, which sustains and expands their destructive capabilities.
He mentioned that these armed groups have used sophisticated weapons against Pakistani citizens and law enforcement agencies, resulting in the loss of thousands of innocent lives.
Furthermore, the envoy voiced particular concern over the presence of large stockpiles of modern arms and ammunition in Afghanistan, focusing on whether these weapons could easily find their way into the hands of non-state actors.
He urged the global community to take swift action to block such illicit access and enhance international cooperation on arms control.
Moreover, Ambassador Ahmad also called upon Afghanistan’s interim authorities to fulfill their commitments to combat terrorism and uphold their responsibilities to ensure peace within their borders.
He stressed the need for strengthening global mechanisms for arms monitoring and control, suggesting that modern technology should be utilized to prevent illegal arms transfers effectively.
“The international community must close existing gaps in its response,” he said. “A coordinated and comprehensive approach is essential to safeguard global peace and security.”
Pakistan confirmed its commitment to working with international partners to find a collective solution to the issue, focusing on that sustained global cooperation is crucial to ensuring long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan and beyond.
