Governor Balochistan urges universities to raise academic standards

QUETTA: Governor Balochistan Jafar Khan Mandokhel urged universities in the province to enhance their academic standards so that students from other provinces are drawn to study in Balochistan instead of local students leaving for higher education elsewhere.

He said this goal could only be achieved if everyone fulfills their responsibilities. He emphasized that faculty members of public universities should prioritize applied research over theoretical “paper research” while continuing to teach their curriculum.

Governor Mandokhel made these remarks during his visit to the University of Balochistan, where he met faculty members working under the tenure track system. Vice Chancellor Dr. Zahoor Bazai and Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Shahwani were also present.

He said that universities must ensure their research directly benefits society. “By bridging the gap between education and research, we can foster innovation and drive economic growth,” he added.

Addressing the tenure track faculty, the Governor said he wanted to personally hear their views to gain an accurate understanding of the ground realities. He expressed confidence that the province would not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Responding to a question, Governor Mandokhel said that just as the Sindh government is promoting the Sindhi language, he is personally committed to taking practical steps for the protection and promotion of Pashto, Balochi, Brahui, and other mother tongues.

He stressed that preserving these linguistic treasures is a national responsibility, as they are deeply tied to Pakistan’s cultural heritage and national identity.

Earlier this week, a high-level government meeting has greenlit several major development initiatives for Balochistan, with a significant focus on improving education and transport infrastructure.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), which decides on the country’s most important economic projects, convened virtually. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and included Balochistan’s Provincial Minister for Irrigation, Mir Muhammad Sadiq Umrani.
