Floods cause Rs822b loss, affect 6.5m people across Pakistan: Report

ISLAMABAD: Recent floods have caused an estimated loss of Rs822 billion across Pakistan, according to an initial government report cited by local media.

Official documents show that the floods severely damaged agriculture and infrastructure, dealing a major blow to the national economy. The government has sought help from development partners to assess the full scale of destruction.

The disaster has affected nearly 6.5 million people across 70 districts. Punjab was the worst-hit province, where rivers Sutlej, Chenab, and Ravi overflowed, flooding vast areas.

Floods in Pakistan’s Punjab

In Punjab alone, 27 districts suffered heavy losses to farmlands and homes. Across the country, 229,763 houses were damaged, while 1,037 people lost their lives and 1,067 others sustained injuries.

The federal government has announced Rs2 million compensation for each person who died in the floods, according to the report.

Earlier, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) warned that the floods could trigger inflationary pressures and slow down economic recovery.

In its Asian Development Outlook, the ADB said that natural disasters such as these floods pose serious risks to Pakistan’s economic stability and growth prospects.

The bank projected GDP growth at around 3% for FY2026, with inflation averaging 6% due to supply chain disruptions, rising food prices, and higher gas tariffs.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) report, around 920 people were killed during monsoon rains and devastating floods across Pakistan this year.
