Steps underway to formulate fisheries policy

Quetta – Efforts are underway to give legal shape to Balochistan’s fisheries policy, with experts from Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences playing a central role.

In a consultative session between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the university, recommendations were shared for the sustainable use of marine resources and the welfare of fishermen.

On this occasion, the support of the GLLSP program was also acknowledged.

Participants emphasized that collaboration among academia, local communities, and institutions is essential for the successful implementation of the policy.

Fisheries in Balochistan hold immense potential for boosting the provincial economy and providing livelihoods to thousands of families.

With its 770-kilometer-long coastline along the Arabian Sea, Balochistan contributes significantly to Pakistan’s total fish production.

Major fishing hubs such as Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara, and Jiwani not only supply seafood to domestic markets but also contribute to exports, earning valuable foreign exchange.

The fisheries sector provides direct employment to fishermen and indirect opportunities in related industries such as seafood processing, transportation, and boat maintenance.

Despite its potential, the sector faces challenges including outdated fishing methods, lack of modern infrastructure, overfishing, and weak policy enforcement.

A well-structured fisheries policy focusing on sustainable practices, scientific resource management, and support for fishing communities can transform this sector into a cornerstone of Balochistan’s economic growth.

Strengthening fisheries will not only ensure food security and export revenues but also uplift coastal communities through better livelihoods and social development.

Fisheries is among a few resources in Balochistan which can grow the graph of economy and employment in the province.

If handles wisely, keeping in view the latest technology and prioritizing the remote areas for jobs and businesses ,  fisheries may help the government to take the province out of chaos and poverty a great deal.
