PM Shehbaz expresses optimism over Gaza talks

LONDON: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has shown optimism that the latest meeting of Muslim and Arab leaders with United States President Donald Trump will give positive results for Gaza, which has endured what he described as Israel’s “genocidal aggression” over the past two years.

In this regard, the Pakistan High Commission in London, the Prime Minister said to the overseas Pakistani, the engagement of Arab-Islamic leaders with President Trump could prove important in creating the international response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Furthermore, Shehbaz, who arrived in the United Kingdom after addressing the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), attended high-level meetings in New York last week. On September 24, he joined leaders from Qatar, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in talks with President Trump.

“I had a constructive and productive meeting with President Trump, which will serve as a stepping stone for further strengthening Pakistan–US relations,” the Prime Minister noted.

In this sense, the grave humanitarian toll in Gaza, Shehbaz said that as many as 64,000 people, including women, children, and the elderly, have been killed since October 7, 2023.

Moreover, the Prime Minister confirmed Pakistan’s progress on economic and security fronts, noting that the economy had stabilized and was now on the path toward growth.

He also admired overseas Pakistanis as the country’s “great ambassadors,” commending their contributions to national progress.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, also addressing the gathering, underlined the importance of continued diplomatic engagement. He said subsequent meetings following the Trump–Muslim leaders’ summit were underway and were expected to deliver tangible outcomes on Gaza.

Dar further mentioned Pakistan’s diplomatic performance at the UNGA, noting that the leadership represented the nation in nearly two dozen meetings, effectively raising the issues of Kashmir, Palestine, and Gaza.

He also focused on Pakistan’s economic turnaround, citing reduced interest rates, declining inflation, and restored stability.
