Mortar shell explosion in Bajaur claims four lives

BAJAUR: Four youngsters died and two sustained injuries after a deadly old mortar shell explosion in Bajaur’s Loi Mamund tehsil. According to local authorities, an old mortar shell exploded in a field in the Laghari area of Loi Mamund tehsil on Saturday.

Police said a group of youngsters found the shell lying in the fields and began playing with it when it went off. The blast killed four boys on the spot and left two more critically injured.

DSP Niaz Khan confirmed that rescue teams shifted the bodies and the injured to the District Headquarters Hospital. He added that police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation following the incident.

The deceased were identified as Sajjad, 18, Naushad, 13, Fawad, 18, and Jawad, 15.

The tragedy comes weeks after a similar incident in Lakki Marwat district. On August 2, five children were killed and 12 others injured when a mortar shell exploded inside a house. Children had found the device outside, brought it home, and triggered the blast while playing with it.

Officials said ambulances rushed all 17 injured to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced five children dead. The victims were between six and 12 years old.
