Trump threatens Afghanistan over return of Bagram Air Base

President Donald Trump has issued a serious threat to Afghanistan, warning of "very bad" consequences if it does not return control of Bagram Air Base to the U.S

United States President Donald Trump has issued a serious threat to Afghanistan, warning of “very bad” consequences if it does not return control of Bagram Air Base to the U.S.

The President made this statement on the social media platform Truth Social. He wrote, “If Afghanistan does not return Bagram Air Base to those who built it, that is, the United States, then it will be very bad.”

This threat comes after Trump revealed that negotiations are officially underway between the United States and the Taliban to take back the base. These talks are being led by US Special Representative Adam Buhler.

Reports indicate that the negotiations are also about counter-terrorism operations. One proposal being considered is the deployment of a limited number of US troops at the air base.

President Trump has repeatedly said that the United States should never have left Bagram. He has emphasized that the military is now trying to get it back. A key reason he gives for wanting the base back is its strategic location, which he says is only an hour away from where China develops its nuclear weapons.

Recently, during a press conference in the UK with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump called this effort “breaking news.” He stated, “we gave the Bagram Air Base to the Taliban for free, but now we are trying to take it back.” The announcement was met with a visible reaction of surprise from the British Prime Minister.

The U.S. originally handed over the base to Afghan authorities in 2021 after 20 years, during the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan. President Trump has now officially begun negotiations to reclaim it.
