Iran has announced it is willing to scale back its nuclear program if the United States and other countries remove the economic sanctions that are hurting its economy.
In an article for a British newspaper, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that his country is ready for a “realistic and lasting agreement.” This deal would involve allowing more monitoring of its nuclear sites and reducing its level of uranium enrichment. In return, Iran demands that all international sanctions be lifted.
Araqchi warned that if this opportunity for a deal is missed, it could lead to “disastrous consequences” for the world.
This message is aimed directly at European nations like France, Germany, and the UK. These countries are trying to negotiate a solution and recently moved to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran, giving them a 30-day deadline to comply.
The dispute began with a 2015 nuclear deal, where Iran agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for relief from sanctions. However, former U.S. President Donald Trump pulled America out of that deal and put harsh economic sanctions back on Iran.
