Senate passes Anti-Terrorism amendment bill 2025

Islamabad – The Senate of Pakistan has passed the Anti-Terrorism Amendment Bill 2025.

The bill was presented by Minister of State Talal Chaudhry, while the amendments proposed by JUI-F Senator Kamran Murtaza were rejected.

Following the passage of the bill, PTI members staged a walkout in protest.

The session, chaired by Deputy Chairman Senate Syedal Khan Nasir, witnessed loud protests and uproar from the opposition.

Senator Kamran Murtaza of JUI-F, while speaking on the bill, argued that despite continuous legislation against terrorism, the problem has only worsened.

He said that the proposed amendments should have been referred to the committee, which would not have caused any harm.

He further pointed out that although the bill speaks of a 90-day period, there are provisions that could extend it further.

He questioned the inclusion of preventive detention under Article 10 and remarked that it is often claimed that enforced disappearances would end, yet the reality is different.

He also criticized equating one wrong act with another, adding that Senator Faisal Sabzwari’s support for the bill appeared to be out of compulsion.

Senator Kamran Murtaza also moved a proposal to refer the bill, along with its amendments, to the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII). During the passage of the bill, PTI members walked out of the House in protest, with only Senator Humayun Mohmand remaining inside to voice his opposition.
