Quetta: Pakistan has urged the Chinese operators of Gwadar Port and the Free Zone to honor their contractual commitments by accelerating industrial development and presenting a time-bound business plan.
During the meeting of the CPEC Joint Working Group, Pakistan reminded the participants of the agreed investment schedule, performance indicators, and operational plans.
The Chinese representatives, in turn, emphasized the need for additional resources and policy support to ensure sustainable activities.
While infrastructure works such as electricity and water supply have been completed, Pakistan reiterated its demand for the completion of domestic projects and strict implementation of the five-year plan.
Chinese projects in Gwadar are a central component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), aimed at transforming the port city into a major regional trade and logistics hub.
Key developments include the construction and operation of Gwadar Port, the establishment of the Gwadar Free Zone for industrial and commercial activities, and significant investment in infrastructure such as roads, power supply, and water facilities.
These projects are designed to facilitate trade between China, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond, while boosting economic opportunities in Balochistan.
Strategically, Gwadar offers China access to the Arabian Sea, reducing reliance on longer maritime routes.
However, the progress of these projects has faced challenges, including delays in industrial setup, local socio-economic concerns, and security issues.
While Chinese operators highlight the need for policy support and additional resources, Pakistan emphasizes timely completion of business plans, adherence to performance targets, and ensuring that local communities benefit from development.
