Qadir Baloch resigns from PPP, bids farewell to politics

QUETTA: Retired Lieutenant General Abdul Qadir Baloch has officially resigned from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and announced his retirement from active politics.

In an exclusive conversation with Samaa TV, he stated that he is stepping away from party politics and resigning from PPP due to personal commitments, health issues, and advancing age.

He emphasized that although he is leaving politics, he will continue to serve Pakistan in his personal capacity.

Expressing his heartfelt gratitude, he thanked all those who supported him throughout his long political journey.

Lieutenant General (Retired) Abdul Qadir Baloch has had a distinguished career in both the military and political arenas of Pakistan.

He was commissioned in the Pakistan Army in 1968 as part of the Baloch Regiment.

During his military service, he actively participated in the 1971 war and later held several key positions, including commanding officer and Inspector General Frontier Corps (IGFC) Balochistan.

One of the most significant postings of his military career was as Corps Commander of Quetta (XII Corps) from 2000 to 2003.

His role was critical in managing security issues in Balochistan and Pakistan’s western border during a tense period.

He retired from the Pakistan Army in 2004 with the rank of Lieutenant General.

Following his retirement, Abdul Qadir Baloch entered politics and joined the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

He was elected to the National Assembly in 2002 from NA-271 (Kharan) and re-elected in 2013.

In Nawaz Sharif’s cabinet, he served as the Federal Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON), dealing with tribal and refugee affairs.

Due to political differences with the PML-N leadership, particularly over civil-military relations, he parted ways with the party and joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in 2021.

However, in July 2025, Lt Gen (Retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch announced his resignation from the PPP and complete retirement from politics.

He cited growing personal commitments, health concerns, and old age as the reasons for stepping away from political life.
