Pakistan appointed Chairman of UNSC Taliban sanctions panel

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been appointed chairman of the UN Security Council committee monitoring implementation of Taliban sanctions.

According to details, Pakistan has also been appointed vice-chairman of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee. This committee reviews the implementation of UN Resolution 1373, which was adopted in 2001.

The Pakistan Mission to the United Nations said that Pakistan has also been appointed co-chairman of the Security Council’s informal Working Group on Documents and the Security Council’s Working Group on Sanctions. The working group on documents aims to improve the functioning, transparency, efficiency and inclusiveness of the Security Council.

The Working Group on Sanctions aims to review and improve the structure, implementation and effectiveness of the UN sanctions regime. According to the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations, these appointments are a recognition of Pakistan’s active engagement with the UN system and its constructive role as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. They also reflect the international recognition of Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts.

Pakistan reiterates its commitment to continue close cooperation with the United Nations and its Member States in promoting the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and will continue to play its role in the global fight against terrorism.
