Over 77,000 accidents recorded on Balochistan highways since 2019:report

Balochistan's national highways have become some of the most dangerous in Pakistan, with over 1,700 fatalities in the last five years.

QUETTA: A shocking new report has revealed that Balochistan’s national highways have become some of the most dangerous in Pakistan, with over 1,700 fatalities in the last five years.

According to data from the Medical Emergency Response Center 1122, covering a period from October 2019 to September 2025, a total of 77,826 traffic accidents were recorded on the province’s national and inter-provincial highways. These incidents resulted in 1,743 deaths and injured 103,902 people. The report indicates that the accident rate in Balochistan is the highest in the country and is worsening each year.

The most lethal route is National Highway N-25, which runs from Karachi to Chaman. This vital commercial road witnessed 35,113 accidents and 900 deaths, attributed to its poor condition as a single-lane road, high speeds, and heavy traffic.

Similarly, the N-50 highway from Quetta to Dera Ismail Khan proved extremely dangerous, with 421 deaths in 24,694 accidents. The narrow, winding, and unlit nature of this road makes nighttime travel particularly hazardous.

The report identified several key causes for the high accident rate, including dangerous overtaking, poor road conditions, a lack of proper signage, unlicensed drivers, and an absence of traffic police and surveillance systems on the highways. The findings underscore an urgent need for government action to prevent these roads from claiming more lives.

Road accidents across Balochistan’s national highways saw a disturbing surge in July 2025, according to a report released by Rescue 1122. The province recorded 2,207 road accidents last month alone, resulting in 26 deaths and 2,913 injuries.
