QUETTA: The Young Pharmacists Alliance (YPA) has issued a strong condemnation against the management of Civil Hospital Quetta, labeling the operation of its Burn Unit with just one pharmacist as a “grave tragedy” and a “joke on public health.”
In a hard-hitting statement, a YPA spokesperson highlighted the critical nature of the Burn Unit, which comprises two ICUs, two wards, and 50 beds. The alliance stated that a department of this scale requires a minimum of 10 to 12 pharmacists working in shifts to function effectively and safely.
The spokesperson expressed outrage that a recent job advertisement had reserved a post for only a single pharmacist, calling the move “very sad and frivolous.” The YPA argued that entrusting the distribution and storage of medicines, along with other pharmaceutical administrative duties, to non-pharmacists reflects “serious negligence and worst incompetence” on the part of the hospital administration.
Asserting that pharmacists are the “backbone of the health system,” the alliance demanded that the hospital administration and the Provincial Health Secretary immediately increase the number of pharmacists in the Burn Unit. The YPA issued a clear ultimatum, warning that it reserves the right to launch vigorous protests if its demands are not met promptly, underscoring the critical role of qualified pharmacists in patient safety.
