Who Is Retired Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed and What Crimes Got Him Jailed?

RAWALPINDI: A Field General Court Martial under the Pakistan Army Act has sentenced retired Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty on all charges, the ISPR announced Thursday.

Faiz Hameed hails from Chakwal and joined the Pakistan Army, serving in the Baloch Regiment. During his military career, he played key roles in intelligence and counterintelligence operations. He also served as DG of the Counterintelligence Section of the ISI at GHQ, and Chief of Staff at the Ten Corps in Rawalpindi.

On 16 June 2019, Hameed was appointed head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) during former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government. As ISI chief, he was heavily involved in national and regional security matters. After the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, a photo of him in Kabul circulated widely, highlighting his regional presence. Some observers also alleged his involvement in political and military matters.

In October 2021, he was appointed Corps Commander Peshawar and later Corps Commander Bahawalpur.

After retirement, Hameed became one of the few senior officers considered for the position of Chief of Army Staff. His career and controversies drew significant attention in military and political circles.

On 12 August 2024, the Pakistan Army initiated Field General Court Martial proceedings against him. He faced four charges: engaging in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act in a manner detrimental to state security, misusing authority and government resources, and causing wrongful loss to others. The trial lasted 15 months.

After extensive legal proceedings, the court found Hameed guilty on all counts. The verdict was promulgated on 11 December 2025. The court confirmed that all legal procedures were followed and that Hameed had full rights, including representation by lawyers of his choice. He retains the right to appeal at the relevant forum.

Authorities noted that Hameed’s involvement in political activities and creating instability in coordination with political elements is being addressed separately.
