LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court has completed the trial in another case linked to the May 9 unrest at Kot Lakhpat Jail, with a verdict expected later today.
The case relates to the torching of vehicles in Lahore’s Gulberg area on May 9. Several senior opposition figures are among the accused, including Dr Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmoodur Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry and Omar Sarfraz Cheema.
The court recorded final statements from 33 accused, including Dr Rashid. The prosecution completed cross-examination of all 41 witnesses presented in the case.
Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Arshad Javed conducted the full trial inside Kot Lakhpat Jail. During proceedings, the court declared four of the accused proclaimed offenders.
Yesterday, the Anti-Terrorism Court Lahore had sentenced the PTI leaders Yasmeen Rashid, Umar Sarfaraz Cheema, Mehmood ul Rasheed and Ejaz Chaudhary to 10 years in the case of breaking of Club Chowk GOR Gate.
The court has ordered the release of Shah Mehmood Qureshi and seven other accused in the case.
However, 13 accused were sentenced to prison.
Meanwhile, ATC Judge Muzaffar Gul has also announced the verdict in the Kot Lakhpat Jail case. Four accused were declared proclaimed offenders during the trial.
It is worth noting that on May 9, 2021, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf activists launched violent protests following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan. They caused damage not only to military installations but also desecrated monuments of martyrs and symbols of the Pakistan Armed Forces’ historic legacy.
The verdict in the case is expected to be announced later today.
Earlier today,a court in Rawalpindi has sentenced former Pakistani prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 10 years in prison each in the Toshakhana-II case, after finding them guilty of corruption and the illegal transfer of state gifts.
According to the verdict, the court ruled that allegations of misuse of authority and unlawful handling of Toshakhana gifts against both accused had been proven.
