Venezuela quake death toll hits 4,930

Massive Earthquake in Venezuela Causes 167 Deaths

CARACAS : The death toll from the two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela has climbed to 4,930, according to a government statement cited by international media, as rescue teams brace for the grim reality that no further survivors are being found.

Officials confirmed that 101 more bodies were recovered in the past 24 hours, while the number of people pulled alive from the rubble has not increased — signaling that hope is fading for those still trapped. The disaster has left 17,907 people homeless, with 21,210 survivors currently sheltered across 107 temporary relief camps set up by authorities.

The twin quakes, which rocked the region days ago, have caused catastrophic infrastructure damage. Official assessments show that 856 buildings were damaged, of which 190 completely collapsed, reducing neighborhoods to mounds of concrete and twisted metal.

In response to the scale of the crisis, a massive relief operation is underway. A total of 2,278 foreign aid workers have joined 30,989 personnel from various national agencies and 31,745 volunteers on the ground, working around the clock to provide medical care, distribute supplies, and clear debris. However, overwhelmed resources and continued aftershocks are hampering efforts.

Authorities have appealed for additional international support as the nation grapples with its deadliest natural disaster in decades. Recovery operations are expected to continue for weeks, with the death toll likely to rise further as collapsed structures are systematically cleared
