WASHINGTON: A US service member was killed in northern Iraq on July 18 while conducting a controlled explosion to destroy ammunition left behind after the downing of an Iranian drone, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
The latest fatality comes amid a sharp escalation of Iranian-linked attacks against US forces in the region, following a separate Iranian strike on Jordan the same day that left two American soldiers dead and one missing.
CENTCOM confirmed that the soldier died during the ammunition disposal operation, which was part of standard protocols after neutralizing the hostile drone. The incident occurred in a volatile area of northern Iraq where Iranian-backed militias have frequently operated.
In a subsequent update, CENTCOM announced that after an extensive search of the site, US military personnel recovered unidentified human remains on Monday. Identification and verification efforts are currently underway, officials said.
The Iraq incident unfolded just hours after a deadly Iranian missile attack on a US position in Jordan on Saturday, July 18. That assault killed two US service members, left a third unaccounted for, and wounded four additional American personnel. Search-and-rescue operations continue for the missing soldier.
“The loss of any service member is a profound tragedy,” a CENTCOM spokesperson said in a statement. “We are conducting thorough investigations into both incidents and will continue to take all necessary measures to protect our forces in the region.”
The back-to-back attacks mark one of the deadliest days for US troops in the Middle East in recent years, raising fresh concerns about Iranian proxy activity and the stability of US military positions across Iraq, Jordan, and Syria.
