WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has cancelled his scheduled visit to India this year. According to prominent American newspaper report, the scheduled visit was cancelled due to rising trade tensions between the two countries.
According to report, Trump no longer intends to travel to India in the coming months. However, neither U.S. nor Indian officials have confirmed or denied the development so far.
The scheduled trip was expected to coincide with the upcoming Quad summit, involving the United States, India, Japan, and Australia, a strategic dialogue aimed at countering regional challenges. Earlier this year, the foreign ministers of the four countries held a high-level meeting in the U.S. in January.
According to the newspaper, President Trump’s decision stems from India’s reluctance to finalize a long-discussed trade deal with the United States. In response, Washington imposed an additional 25% tariff on certain Indian goods, raising the total tariff rate to 50%.
Tensions between the two nations have been simmering in recent months, not only on trade issues but also over strategic disagreements. Trump has repeatedly referred to his role during Indo-Pak conflicts, claims which New Delhi has often downplayed or denied.

The sudden cancellation adds another layer of uncertainty to an already strained bilateral relationship that was once considered on an upward trajectory.
Further details are expected as official statements emerge from either side.
