WASHINGTON: A foreign news agency has claimed in a report that the US military is preparing for a potentially weeks-long war against Iran on the orders of President Donald Trump, a move that could lead to the worst tension between the two countries in the past.

According to the Reuters report, officials who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the plan stated that the US military is actively preparing so that if President Donald Trump orders an attack on Iran, it will be carried out. The officials described the move as a threat to the ongoing diplomatic process between Iran and the US.

The officials indicated that the current planning is more complex than previous iterations. One official said that the US military could target not only Iranian nuclear facilities but also Iranian state and security facilities in this campaign. However, the official refused to provide specific details regarding the scope of the potential targets.

The report further stated that the United States fears a retaliatory attack by Iran, which could lead to a series of counterattacks and retaliations from both sides over time, potentially escalating into a prolonged conflict.

When asked about the planning of an attack on Iran, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly responded that President Trump has kept all options open regarding Iran. “He listens to different perspectives on any issue, but makes the final decision based on what is best for our country and national security,” she said.
