US Embassy in Baghdad targeted in missile attack

BAGHDAD: Security was placed on high alert in the Iraqi capital late on Saturday, after a missile attack targeted the US Embassy in the fortified Green Zone.

Iraqi officials confirmed the attack, stating that a missile landed near the embassy’s helipad. According to the officials, the projectile was fired towards the heavily fortified diplomatic compound, which houses the US diplomatic mission and other foreign embassies.

Following the strike, Iraqi security forces swiftly cordoned off the area surrounding the embassy and launched an investigation into the incident. The officials added that, fortunately, no casualties were reported as a result of the attack.

The attack on the US embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone raises concerns about the security of diplomatic missions in the country. The heavily fortified area has been a frequent target of rocket and missile attacks in the past, often attributed to Iran-aligned militia groups.

As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the latest strike. Security forces remain on high alert as the investigation continues.
