Balochistan to develop major urban forest park on Quetta’s Sariab road

Balochistan government has announced a major urban forestry project spanning 63 acres along the city's Sariab Road.

QUETTA: In a significant move to combat environmental degradation and enhance public green spaces, the Balochistan government has announced a major urban forestry project spanning 63 acres along the city’s Sariab Road. The decision was finalized in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Qadir Khan on Wednesday, focusing on the establishment of the “Arian Forest.”

Addressing officials, Chief Secretary Qadir Khan stated that this ambitious green initiative is designed to improve Quetta’s urban ecosystem. The project’s core aim is to plant thousands of trees, creating accessible green space for the public and integrating natural vegetation with urban infrastructure. He emphasized that the urban forest would play a crucial role in reducing air pollution and moderating summer temperatures in the city.

Highlighting the broader environmental benefits, the Chief Secretary noted that such urban forests positively impact carbon credits by absorbing carbon dioxide, thereby helping reduce greenhouse gases. He issued directives for extensive tree plantation along the road to complement the project.

The meeting was informed that the development would not be limited to afforestation. Alongside the urban forest, a residential and commercial zone is planned, including facilities such as a hospital, school, parking, and a mall. This mixed-use approach is intended to make the project sustainable and generate revenue for the government.

The session was attended by senior bureaucrats, including Additional Chief Secretary Development Zahid Saleem, Secretary Forest Abdul Fateh Bahnagar, Secretary UP&D Ishaq Jamali, Secretary PHE Basham Ghilzai, Secretary Environment Ali Akbar Baloch, Commissioner Quetta Shahzeb Kakar, and Director General QDA Aurangzeb Kasi. Their collective presence underscores the government’s integrated approach to merging environmental conservation with urban planning.

The Arian Forest project marks a pivotal step in addressing Quetta’s environmental challenges, promising a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for its residents.

Meanwhile the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has officially commenced its campaign for the upcoming local government LG elections in Quetta, with party leaders expressing strong confidence in securing victory and providing genuine public service. The political mobilization occurred during a significant gathering at Lehri House on Sunday, where candidates from various union councils and wards affiliated with Zarghun and Chiltan Towns submitted their applications for party tickets.
