UNGA Adopts Pakistan-Backed Resolution on Kashmir, Palestine

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution on the peoples’ right to self-determination, Pakistan’s UN mission said Friday. The move highlights global attention to the Palestine and Kashmir issues.

The resolution, adopted by consensus, was recommended last month by the 193-member General Assembly’s Third Committee, which handles social, humanitarian, and cultural matters, Pakistani state media reported.

Co-sponsored by 65 countries, the resolution urged nations to immediately halt foreign military intervention and occupation, as well as acts of repression, discrimination, and maltreatment.

It declared the General Assembly’s firm opposition to foreign aggression and occupation that suppress the right to self-determination in parts of the world.

Pakistan’s UN mission said the resolution demonstrates broad international support for peoples facing colonialism, foreign domination, and occupation.

“For the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Palestine, the resolution reinforces global attention to their just cause and aspirations for freedom and dignity,” the mission added.

Pakistan does not recognize Israel and supports an independent Palestinian state based on internationally agreed parameters and pre-1967 borders. Islamabad calls for an end to Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

Kashmir has been divided between Pakistan and India since independence in 1947. Both countries claim the entire territory but control it in part and have fought multiple wars over it.

Pakistan has repeatedly urged India to hold a UN-mandated plebiscite in the disputed region.

Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, said self-determination is not just a historical aspiration but an enduring obligation.

“Recent developments in the Middle East show that lasting peace cannot be achieved by denying the Palestinian people their right to self-determination,” he said Thursday.
