UN turns down Baloch separatists’ claim

NEW YORK: The United Nations on Thursday firmly dismissed any notion of supporting a reported declaration of independence by certain Baloch separatist elements, reaffirming its consistent stance in support of Pakistan’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

During a routine press briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq was asked about the separatist declaration by a journalist from Kurdish television. In response, Haq clearly stated, “We refer you back to the UN Charter, which emphasizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states. That includes Pakistan.”

The United Nations has long upheld the principles outlined in its founding charter, particularly Article 2(4), which underscores the inviolability of the territorial integrity and political independence of all Member States.

Over the years, the UN has repeatedly emphasized that any disputes or internal movements must be resolved peacefully and within the framework of a state’s constitution.

In the case of Pakistan, the UN has consistently backed its stance against separatist movements, reiterating that international recognition remains with the state of Pakistan, and no group can unilaterally declare independence without broader international consensus and legal legitimacy.
