UN Chief urges US, Iran to ‘seize diplomatic opportunity’ in Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS : United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the United States and Iran to seize the diplomatic opportunity presented by the upcoming talks in Islamabad, his spokesperson confirmed.

According to Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief’s spokesperson, Guterres believes the negotiations in Pakistan offer a chance for “de-escalation and the prevention of a return to hostilities.”

Dujarric added that the Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Jean Arnault, who is currently in Tehran, will remain “in the region to support diplomatic efforts.”

When asked by a reporter whether the UN plans to send Arnault or any other representatives to Islamabad specifically for these talks, Dujarric replied: “Not specifically for these talks, but we will be kept apprised.”

The comments come as both US and Iranian delegations are either already in or en route to Islamabad for high-level discussions centered on Iran’s nuclear program and regional tensions
