ANKARA: In Turkey, liking other women’s photos on social media can legally be considered grounds for divorce.
A Turkish court has ruled that a husband’s consistent engagement with women’s posts online can be used as valid evidence during divorce proceedings.
According to the Court of Cassation, a man from the city of Kayseri damaged “marital trust” by repeatedly liking pictures of other women on social media.
In this case, both husband and wife had filed for divorce. Their identities were withheld, with the man referred to as S.B. and the woman as H.B.
The wife alleged that her husband did not value her, failed to provide financial support, and undermined his loyalty by reacting to posts made by other women.
The husband, on the other hand, claimed that his wife insulted his father, displayed excessive jealousy, and used offensive language online.
The court ultimately found the husband more at fault and ordered him to compensate his wife.
His social media activity—specifically the likes on other women’s posts was accepted as key evidence.
The husband appealed the decision, but the appellate Supreme Court upheld the ruling, stating that liking other women’s photos online breaks marital trust.
