Trump Imposes 25% Tariffs on Countries Trading with Iran

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has announced tough new economic measures against countries that continue to trade with Iran, as tensions between Washington and Tehran escalate.

Trump said any country conducting business with Iran will face an additional 25% tariff on all trade with the United States.

In a statement posted on social media, the US president said the decision takes immediate effect and will allow no exemptions.

He warned that countries maintaining commercial ties with Iran should prepare for added financial pressure in the US market.

The announcement comes amid growing unrest inside Iran, where anti-government protests have intensified in recent weeks.

Global concern has mounted over a crackdown by Iranian security forces on demonstrators.

US-based human rights organisations claim that 648 people have been killed during protests over the past two weeks.

Trump has previously warned Iran’s leadership against the use of force on protesters, saying it could lead to serious consequences.
