WEB DESK: US President Donald Trump has communicated his opposition to additional Israeli strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure, believing that Tehran has received a clear message following this week’s attack on its South Pars gas field, according to US officials cited by the Wall Street Journal .
The Israeli airstrike, which targeted the South Pars complex in Asaluyeh on Wednesday, was carried out with the prior knowledge and endorsement of the Trump administration, serving as a direct signal to Iran over its blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz . However, American officials told the Journal that Trump now feels the message has been delivered and wishes to pause strikes on energy facilities .
The president’s position is not described as final, but rather conditional on Iran’s future behavior in the Strait of Hormuz. Officials indicated that if Tehran takes further provocative actions in the vital waterway—through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas passes—Trump may reconsider his stance and support targeting additional Iranian energy assets .
The Wednesday attack on South Pars, one of the world’s largest gas reserves and a cornerstone of Iran’s energy supply, has halted production at linked refineries and sent regional tensions soaring . In a fiery response, Tehran has declared all oil facilities in the region that are owned or operated by American companies as legitimate targets .
