Trump Again Praises ‘Highly Respected’ Field Marshal

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Monday again praised Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, saying he helped prevent a war between India and Pakistan in May.

Trump made the remarks at an event in Florida alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan.

He described Syed Asim Munir as a “highly respected general” and noted that he holds the rank of field marshal.

Trump said Pakistan’s prime minister credited the army chief with saving millions of lives by stopping the conflict.

He also claimed that eight aircraft were destroyed during the Pakistan-India clashes.

The US president has repeatedly praised Pakistan’s civil and military leadership since the May tensions with India.

In October 2025, Trump also lauded Syed Asim Munir as a “good man” and described Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as a “great leader.”

He made those remarks while addressing the ASEAN Summit 2025 in Kuala Lumpur.

Trump said he had heard reports of a possible conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, but said Pakistani leaders resolved the situation quickly and peacefully.

“I am a proponent of peace across the world,” Trump said, adding that he has helped stop eight wars so far.

He said he uses trade as a tool to prevent conflicts.

“We prefer trade over war,” Trump said.

“I like stopping wars,” he added, calling economic cooperation the key to lasting peace.
