DHAKA: At least 12 people were killed and 10 others injured when a train collided with a passenger bus at a level crossing in Bangladesh’s Cumilla district early Sunday, authorities said.
The accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. local time near Padua Bazar in the Jangalia area of Sadar South Upazila. A Chattogram-bound mail train struck the bus as it was crossing the tracks, railway officials said.
The victims included seven men, two women, and three children. Many of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, several in critical condition.
Following the crash, railway authorities suspended two gatekeepers, Hilaluddin and Mehdi Hasan, for alleged negligence. Mustafa Rehman Bhuiyan said further action would follow after investigations.
Authorities have set up probe committees to determine the cause of the accident. Local residents have called for stricter safety measures at level crossings to prevent future tragedies.
Train services on the Dhaka–Chattogram route were temporarily halted but resumed after the tracks were cleared, officials said.
