RAWALPINDI: A hearing in the Toshakhana-II case against former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi is expected to take place (today) Saturday at Adiala Jail, sources said.
Court staff have informed Salman Safdar, counsel for the PTI founder, about the scheduled hearing. The previous hearing in the case was held on October 16 at Adiala Jail, after which proceedings were adjourned three times.
According to sources, the trial has reached an advanced stage, with the recording of evidence, statements of the accused under Section 342, and final arguments already completed. Once the prosecution submits its rebuttal, the court may reserve its verdict.
The Toshakhana case relates to allegations that former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan failed to properly declare and unlawfully sold government gifts received during official foreign visits, in violation of the law governing the state gift repository (Toshakhana).
A trial court in Islamabad found Khan guilty of “corrupt practices” sentenced to 14 years in prison, and his conviction triggered a five-year disqualification from holding public office under the Constitution.
After the trial court’s verdict, Imran Khan challenged the conviction in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), filing a petition to overturn the judgment and seeking suspension of the sentence.
The Islamabad High Court in April 2024 suspended the 14-year prison sentence and fines imposed on Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in a related Toshakhana reference, providing temporary relief pending appeal proceedings. The couple, however, remained in custody on the basis of other convictions in different cases.
