Top Daesh operative arrested in joint Pak-Turkish intelligence operation at Afghan border

ISLAMABAD: A senior ISIS (Daesh) operative wanted by Turkiye has been captured in a joint operation at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, according to security sources.

The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) carried out the operation together. They arrested Ozgur Altun, a high-ranking Daesh terrorist listed in Turkiye’s orange category.

Altun, also known by his code name “Abu Yasir Al Turki,” was a senior media official for Daesh’s Khorasan branch. He helped transfer Daesh members from Europe and Central Asia to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.

The authorities have extradited Altun to Turkiye after the successful operation.

Sources say Altun had ordered attacks on concert venues in Turkiye and Europe. These locations often attract large civilian crowds.

When ISI learned about Altun’s presence in Afghanistan and his plans to enter Pakistan, they promised full support to MIT. Pakistani intelligence told their Turkish counterparts, “Turkiye’s enemy is also Pakistan’s enemy.”

Following this, MIT and ISI launched a precise joint operation. They captured Altun at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The operation stopped planned Daesh attacks in Turkiye. It also exposed the group’s recruitment methods and seized digital materials and attack plans.

The case highlights strong counter-terrorism cooperation between Pakistan and Turkiye.
