UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, voiced deep concern at the United Nations Security Council over terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory.
Addressing the council, Ahmad said Pakistan would not compromise on its sovereignty or the safety of its citizens.
He said recent terrorist attacks had killed more than 80 innocent Pakistanis. He added that evidence showed Afghan soil was used to plan and orchestrate the assaults.
“These elements continue to target Pakistan,” he said, warning that such activities pose a serious threat to regional peace and stability.
Ahmad urged Afghanistan’s interim authorities to ensure that their territory is not used for terrorist activities against Pakistan or any other country.
He also called on the international community to treat the matter with urgency and take effective steps to dismantle terrorist networks.
During his speech, the Pakistani envoy expressed concern over Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis and economic hardship. He highlighted restrictions on women’s rights and stressed the need to protect fundamental freedoms.
He said the Afghan people must receive basic rights and essential services to lay the foundation for lasting peace in the region.
