DHAKA: Bangladeshi authorities have identified the alleged prime suspect in the murder of youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi and issued a nationwide surveillance notice along with a travel ban against him.
On Sunday, a Dhaka court ordered that the main accused, Faisal Karim Masud, be barred from leaving the country after investigators named him as the key suspect in the case.
Police have confirmed that lookout notices have also been issued for other individuals believed to be involved in the attack.
According to Bangladeshi media, security agencies are confident that Faisal Masud is still inside Bangladesh but is frequently changing locations to avoid arrest.
Officials stated that multiple investigation teams have been deployed to track his movements and maintain close monitoring.
It is worth noting that 32-year-old Usman Hadi was shot dead in Dhaka last week.
On December 12, two assailants on a motorcycle approached his battery-powered auto-rickshaw and shot him in the head.
He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors confirmed severe brain damage.
Due to his critical condition, Hadi was transferred to Singapore General Hospital on December 15 and admitted to the neurosurgical intensive care unit.
Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs later confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries despite all medical efforts.
Sharif Usman Hadi was a prominent figure in the 2024 student-led protest movement and served as the spokesperson for “Inqilab Manch.”
He was also preparing to contest the upcoming general elections from the Dhaka-8 constituency in Bijoynagar.
Hadi was widely known for his criticism of India’s role in Bangladesh’s internal political affairs, particularly after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina moved to India following last year’s protests.
Following his death, protests erupted in several Bangladeshi cities, with student groups and supporters demanding immediate arrests and justice.
Authorities have warned against unrest and pledged strict action against those responsible.
