Strong earthquake jolts multiple cities in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 jolted Islamabad and several cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces, on Monday.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale and strong earthquake tremors were felt across various parts of Pakistan, sparking panic among residents in several major cities and towns.

The tremors were felt in Islamabad and several cities across Punjab, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Mandi Bahauddin, Sarai Alamgir, and Sargodha. Other affected areas in the province included Daska, Chakwal, Choa Saidan Shah, Kallar Syedan, and Safdarabad.

Tremors were also reported from Kallar Kahar, Gujrat, Kharian, Gujar Khan, Phalia, and Khanqah Dogran, causing people to rush out of homes and buildings.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, residents of Peshawar, Charsadda, Swat, Dir, Buner, and Kohat felt the earthquake. Reports also came in from Mardan, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, and nearby areas.

Further tremors were experienced in Nowshera, Khyber, Landi Kotal, North Waziristan, Miranshah, and Hangu.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, tremors were felt in Mirpur and surrounding areas, while in Gilgit-Baltistan, areas including Ghizer also reported the quake.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage to infrastructure, but authorities are assessing the situation.

According to National Seismic Monitoring Centre, Islamabad, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Hindukush mountain range in Afghanistan at the depth of 15 kilometres.
