QUETTA: The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has launched an extensive public awareness campaign across Quetta to prevent gas-related accidents during the winter season. The initiative was announced by General Manager Raheel Malik at a media briefing on Thursday, emphasizing the paramount importance of saving “precious human lives.”

Speaking at the campaign’s inauguration, GM Malik stated that the drive aims to educate consumers on essential safety measures to avoid major incidents, often caused by gas leaks. He stressed that the campaign, which may run until March 2026, underscores the company’s commitment to safety, reiterating that “for us, human life is the most important thing.”

Officials urged the public to install a main gas valve for emergency shut-offs, use only approved appliances, and ensure gas heaters are turned off before sleeping. A strict warning was also issued against the use of illegal gas compressors, with promises of firm action against violators. Despite high seasonal demand, the company assured it is taking steps to maintain an uninterrupted gas supply.

Later, an awareness event was held at a local hotel, engaging religious scholars, media representatives, and civil society members. Speakers unanimously highlighted that preventing gas accidents is a collective responsibility. Religious scholars framed safety as a moral and social duty, while media persons pledged support for continuous public messaging. Participants welcomed the initiative and called for its expansion to other districts in Balochistan, noting that community engagement is vital to avert tragic losses.

Meanwhile in a significant step towards modernizing education in Balochistan, Provincial Education Minister Raheela Hameed Khan Durrani has declared it imperative to align teachers and students with the demands of the contemporary, technology-driven world. She emphasized that keeping pace with global advancements is impossible without a strong foundation in information technology and artificial intelligence.

The minister made these remarks during a ceremony held at the Government Postgraduate Girls College Quetta Cantt, where a total of 300 laptops were distributed. The initiative, which saw 200 teachers and 100 female students receive the devices, is aimed at bridging the digital divide and enhancing digital literacy. Minister Durrani stated that the youth of Balochistan possess immense, God-given potential, and it is the government’s responsibility to provide them with the tools to harness it.
