MADRID: The government of Spain has recalled its ambassador from Israel, according to the official gazette published Wednesday.
Sources in the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv will now operate under a charge d’affaires.
Spain and Israel established diplomatic relations in 1986, but ties have frequently faced strain. Madrid has strongly criticized Israel’s war in Gaza and opposed joint United States and Israeli military actions against Iran.
On Tuesday, Spain’s foreign minister said relations between Spain and the United States remain normal despite threats of trade sanctions from Donald Trump over Madrid’s opposition to the war against Iran.

The government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez last week described the war against Iran as illegal. It also barred US aircraft from using joint military bases in southern Spain for operations related to the conflict.
