SYDNEY: Australian police have confirmed that the shooting incident on a beach in Sydney was carried out by a father and son.
New South Wales Police revealed during a press conference that the attack took place during a Jewish community event.
One of the attackers was killed at the scene, while the second suspect remains critically injured.
According to the NSW Police Commissioner, the deceased attacker was identified as 50-year-old Sajid Akram, while the injured suspect is his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram.
Police stated that Sajid Akram had legally held a firearms license for the past 10 years and was an active member of a gun club.
Six firearms were recovered from his possession, and investigations are underway to determine which of these weapons were used in the shooting.
Police also disclosed that two active homemade explosive devices were found near the crime scene and were safely secured by authorities.
It is worth mentioning that as soon as the attacker’s name was identified as Naveed, the Indian , Afghan and the Israeli media spread disinformation making false claims that the attacker was a Pakistani national.
They spread the image of Sheikh Naveed, a young Pakistani engineer who had no link to the terror attack. Sheikh Naveed came up with a video statement that the claims made about him were a propaganda campaign by the Afghan and the Indian media.
The shooters, however, were identified as the Afghan nationals residing in Australia for the past many years.
The Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post also hurried and share the age and other details of the attacker aiming to prove him to be a Pakistani national. However, after the Fact Check, the age, education and other details proved those claims as false.
Officials have confirmed that there are no additional suspects, but investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind what is being treated as a potential terrorist-related attack.
