Shots across the frontier: Islamabad warns Kabul after cross-border exchange

ISLAMABAD: The government accused Afghan forces of launching a series of unprovoked cross-border attacks that targeted multiple frontier points, including positions near the Kurram border, prompting a robust response from security forces.

The firing erupted at five to six border locations shortly after Afghanistan’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, visited New Delhi for talks with Indian officials.

The military described the incidents as “coordinated” and suggested they may be linked to closer political engagement between Kabul and New Delhi a claim that has not been independently verified.

Furthermore, the security forces said they responded decisively, engaging the attackers and inflicting vital damage. The military reported that two Afghan check posts were destroyed and that five assailants were killed.

Moreover, Afghanistan’s interim representatives did not immediately respond to the Pakistani claims.

The timing of the alleged incidents coinciding with the Afghan minister’s visit to India raised tensions in Islamabad, with some officials characterising the attacks as part of a broader strategy to destabilise Pakistan.

In this regard, the humanitarian and civilian impacts of the reported exchange were not detailed in the Pakistani statement.
