PROVIDENCE, R.I. : A shooting on the campus of Brown University on Saturday afternoon has left two people dead and eight others critically injured, sending shockwaves through the prestigious Ivy League institution and surrounding community.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:05 PM local time (21Shootung05 GMT). Providence Police and university authorities immediately responded, securing the area and initiating a massive manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large. According to initial police descriptions, the attacker is a male dressed entirely in black who fled the scene on foot.
The eight injured victims were transported to local hospitals, where authorities report they are currently in stable condition. However, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley issued a grave warning, stating that the number of casualties could still rise as the investigation unfolds.
In the chaotic aftermath, one individual was initially detained but was later released after police determined they had no involvement in the shooting.
As of Saturday evening, an active shelter-in-place order remained in effect for the greater Brown University area, urging residents and students to stay indoors while law enforcement continues the search. The university has activated its emergency notification system, advising the community to avoid the campus.
The shooting has drawn national attention, with officials confirming that former President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation.
Brown University officials have not yet released further details about the victims or a potential motive. The investigation, involving local and state law enforcement, is ongoing as the community grapples with the tragedy.

According to reports from multiple US media outlets, the assailant has been identified as Rahmanullah Lucknowal, described as an Afghan-born individual who entered the United States illegally in 2021 during the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
